dokuz8’s Data Journalism Performance to be Presented at 11th Global Investigative Journalism Conference in Hamburg

Throughout 2018, Media Research Association and dokuz8NEWS have collaborated in offering data journalism training programs in Turkey, followed by publication of data journalism articles with support from the Dutch MATRA Program. The performance of this project has been evaluated by participants and is now ready for presenting to an expert audience in Germany’s Hamburg.

This year between September 26-29 in Germany’s Hamburg the 11th Global Investigative Journalism Conference is taking place, which is the largest international gathering of investigative reporters, organized biannually. 403 speakers in hundreds of sessions are going to present the best examples of investigative journalism throughout the 3 day conference in coming days. The conference is expected to attract over a thousand participants and will be located at two close-by venues at Der Spiegel Publishing House and HafenCity University.

While speakers present best examples and studies on investigative journalism from around the world, there will be 76 global organizations that will have open desks to inform participants concerning latest developments at their institutions and offer information on future activities.

The 2018 project on Developing Data Journalism in Turkey led by Media Research Association and dokuz8NEWS in Turkey with support from MATRA Fund of the Netherlands and supported by The Guardian Data Team, will also be presented with its results at the conference. dokuz8NEWS co-founder & researcher Yunus Erduran will hold a session at 9.00 am on September 28 during the conference to present his speech on impact of data journalism trainings in building participatory journalism culture, in the session with co-speaker Irving Huerta from Goldsmith University.

During 2018 dokuz8NEWS ran the project on Developing Data Journalism in Turkey which lasted for 15 months and offered three training sessions for 60 participants who later published 120 data journalism articles. Through this project dokuz8NEWS has become the most frequent publisher of data journalism articles in Turkey and continued to support journalists in Turkey in developing skills for conducting data journalism.

During the conference sponsored by Global Investigative Journalism Network, there will also be held an award ceremony for big and small newsrooms that conduct investigative journalism. A total of 12 publications will compete for the two awards and receive an honorary plaque as well as a prize of $2.000.
